Bone Broth 101

Bone broth is one of the best & easiest ways to nourish your body. Because of the lack of nose to tail eating we are missing out on many nutrients our bodies need. Bone broth is an incredible way to get many of those nutrients & minerals back in our diets.

Reasons to consume bone broth:
-contains collagen needed for skin, hair, muscle, bone, & cartilage health
-boosts immune health
-maintains & heals your gut
-contains trace minerals (calcium, iron, potassium & more)
-high in protein & fat (1 cup/broth= 5g protein & 3g fat)
-it’s very gentle, nourishing & healing to the body

Bone broth is high in gelatin (aka collagen) which is what makes it so thick and gelatinous when cooked right. A report in the Journal of Clinical Gastroenterology, found that gelatin can effectively boost intestinal health, integrity, & reduce intestinal inflammation. Studies have also shown that people who have digestive issues often have lower levels of collagen. Remember- collagen is a component of bone broth.  So drink that bone broth!

How To Make Bone Broth:
It’s really hard to mess up bone broth. As long as you have the bones & water you’re good to go! Just stick it in a pot and get boiling!
1) In a pot or instapot, place chicken or beef bones, feet, and/or cartilage. I fill the pot half-ish way with bones.
2) Add apple cider vinegar (1/4 cup), herbs of choice (I like parsley, oregano, tarragon, basil, & thyme), & veggie scraps if you have them (peppers, carrots, celery, & onions.)
3) Cover ingredients with water & cook. I usually make a gallon of broth at a time.
Stove top- boil for 16hrs (you can store the half cooked bone broth in the fridge overnight if needed.)
Instapot- cook on high pressure for 4hrs, then do it again. Once the 2nd 4hr cycle ends you can either be done or you can leave it on low for 12hrs.
4) When it’s done, strain the chunks & store in the fridge for up to 2 weeks.

Pro tip: save your veggie scraps to toss in bone broth. Peppers, carrots, celery, onions, garlic, etc. They all work great!

How ever you make it & use it, adding bone broth into your diet will be an incredible boost to your overall wellbeing. Bone broth is so easy to make & will do a ton to naturally & gently nourish your body. Bonus: it’s super easy to use!
Here are a few of my favorite ways to use broth:
-cook rice in broth
-make ramen with it
-use it as a soup base
-cook pasta in broth
-cook a roast in broth
-simply drink it like tea
